Physical Therapist for Basketball
An effective physical therapist for basketball can make the difference with your ongoing performance and your teams' success. Our sports rehab physical therapy is designed to restore optimal function back to your basketball game.
At Breaking Through our goal is to get you back in the game ASAP. We use a unique method of physical therapy to help you break through the pain and the cycle of sports rehab techniques. Our sports rehab physical therapy can have you moving with more function and less pain in fewer sessions.
Whether you're a high school athlete, a weekend warrior, or a professional, we know that when basketball is a part of your life, you don't want anything keeping you off the court. At Breaking Through, our sports rehab physical therapy sessions are created with your personal needs and goals as the priority. We don't only focus on the pain or the affected area, but look at the whole body. Our treatment isn't focused on the symptoms. We find the root cause of your discomfort, improve strength, and get you back in the game.
Our own Lizzie Bender has been playing basketball for 18+ years! She got her start playing in a youth travel league, which led her to playing at Gilmour Academy High School in Gates Mills, Ohio. Her team won the OHSAA Division III State Championship in 2016, and she helped lead her team to multiple regional titles after that. Lizzie went on to play college basketball at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where she helped her team win two Conference championships as well as a trip to the NCAA tournament. Lizzie's basketball journey did not end there though. She is now the head coach of the Freshman Basketball Team at Magnificat High School in Rocky River. From youth travel basketball to playing in the NCAA tournament, these experiences give her a unique understanding of what student athletes need to perform at their best. That insight carries into her work with our team and her connections with families and athletes.
Physical Therapist for Basketball: Common Injuries
Basketball is a high-impact, high-velocity sport that requires intense acceleration, deceleration, explosive jumping, and quick cuts. This puts significant strain on the lower body joints and often leads to non-contact injuries. Some common basketball injuries include ankle sprains (lateral and high ankle), jumper's knee (patellar tendonitis), ACL and meniscus tears, Achilles tendonitis, low back pain, shoulder / rotator cuff issues, etc. Whether your injury is common or uncommon, our physical therapy sessions evaluate and treat functional mobility in the whole body to get everything back to optimal performance.
How Not to Treat a Basketball Injury
We will never tell you to stop playing your sport, we want you to be able to do the activities you love. Our physical therapists will perform a hands-on, one-on-one assessment and prescribe exercises catered to your individual needs. We do NOT prescribe rest, ice, heat, massage, taping, orthotics, anti-inflammatories or injections. We will find out the root cause of your pain, strengthen your body, and get you back to doing what you love in less visits with long-term results.
Basketball Rehab Physical Therapy Sessions:
The physical therapists at Breaking Through begin each team sport rehab session with a personal, one-to-one assessment and treatment focused on your specific individual needs. This assessment helps us to look at your functional movement from your head to your toes. A traditional sports physical therapist will spend the entire rehab assessment focused on the specific area that has decreased mobility and function. Our treatment approach helps us find the root cause of your pain and dysfunction. Your team sport rehab will have long-term results in fewer visits, and help you eliminate pain, increase strength, and prevent further injury.
Watch this video to learn more about our unique approach!
What to Expect at Your Sports Rehab Physical Therapy Session:
- Assessment: We will assess a functional screen to look at your movement and determine what is limiting you.
- Treatment: Using the One80 System®, a unique hands-on treatment approach, we will find the root cause of your injury and improve your functioning.
- Re-Assessment: At the conclusion of each visit, we will re-asses your functional screen to see how your movement and function has improved, and how your limitations have decreased.
- Education: Our goal is to educate you on how to prevent future injuries, increase your muscle strength, eliminate your pain, and avoid repeat physical therapy visits with a customized home exercise program. We want You to become the expert of You!

I absolutely love this place!! Josh and the team really helped me with my back pain, leg and ankle pain. Im very impressed and pleased.+0Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
10 stars! Four months ago after resuming an aggressive (and probably overzealous) 7-days-a-week fitness program, I began to have terrible shoulder pain. The bursitis or inflammation or tendonitis or microtearing (?) was on both sides and I suffered through a whole month while avoiding the gym, watching random YouTube rehab videos, getting massages, taking lots of ibuprofen, and not improving at all. So out of frustration, I started coming to Breaking Through for mapping of the pain, supervised exercises, specialized massage, assignments of exercises to do at home, and specific coaching on how to safely re-enter the gym and ramp back up to my previous workout routine albeit more safely. I got some immediate relief and now I'm 95% better mobility-wise and pain free! What is perhaps more amazing is that during my initial intake at Breaking Through, I was asked to draw on a diagram all the places with pain — and not just the issue bringing me to therapy. So, I marked my right hip as having issues because it's been bothering me for years — even after just walking sometimes. For this issue, I was given exercises and massage treatment ... and within about six weeks that hip pain totally went away — Years of Pain Gone — truly a MIRACLE. For this, I still do the specific home exercises I was assigned because I don't want to ever have that pain come back. I made a slap bracelet with the assigned exercises from Breaking Through written on it so I remember to keep up with them. Just WOW. Very happy we have this place in Cleveland. When I have time I'm also planning on trying out their neurofeedback equipment rental for stress reduction.+3Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Jen and Josh have been instrumental in my road back to physical health. I am nearly 50 pounds lighter than this photo and I’m moving around better than I have in years. Thanks to their treatment advice and maintenance, I don’t have to see them much anymore. That’s one thing I love about them is that they are not there so you have to come back every week. They give you the tools to exercise on your own and are genuinely concerned about you getting better and staying that way. They also introduced me to some footwear that I feel has changed my life as well.+0Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Every staff member at Breaking Though Intensive Therapy is kind and very dedicated to get their patients to a physically healthy place. My son has done tremendous repair and recovery with the consistent exercises that Evan has given him to strengthen the areas of weakness that turn up during intense sports play. We are very grateful for their knowledge of the body and methods of how to get the mechanics working properly again. Thank you for your time & expertise!+0Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I had plantar fasciitis for months. I thought I could fix it on my own through YouTube videos and advice from others. I could barely hobble mornings because my pain was so bad. My daughter suggested Breaking Through Intensive Therapy in Middleburg Heights. They are absolutely amazing!!! They didn't just treat my foot's surface symptoms, they have a 180 approach which finds the root cause of the pain and corrects that. It's truly incredible what they do. I felt so welcome and no question was too silly or unimportant. I still learn something new every time I go there. It's awesome. I learned so much and feel so much better and I cannot recommend Breaking Through Intensive Therapy enough. They are so incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and skilled, and you will wonder why you waited so long to go.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I love that the team at Breaking Through takes such a different approach to PT. I’ve sent several members of my family there for various issues, and the sessions we’ve had have been simple and subtle, but so effective!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Over the past year I have experienced growing pain and discomfort in my lower back and down my legs . . . including some numbness in my feet. I had begun a program of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen to manage/control the pain. At a meeting with friends, someone suggested physical therapy as a means of finding relief. They suggested Breaking Through, where several people had already had success in managing new back pain. Because of the relationship with those people, I went to Breaking Through and had my first treatment. I felt immediate relief right after the first treatment . . . and for the week that followed. So much so, that I had no need for the pain medication I had been taking prior to the treatment. I have been given exercises that take about 15 minutes to do 3 times a day. Since doing those, I am now experiencing very little pain and hope to achieve complete pain free days in the near future. I will see the therapist for a few more treatments to be sure it is not temporary, but I am feeling confident that the exercises and the treatment have helped me find relief that will lead to a pain free life again. I was actually considering surgery, as was proposed to me after an evaluation by a neurosurgeon, until I started the treatments. I am now convinced that Breaking Through has helped me "break through" the pain . . . and I'm on my way to those pain free days again. I highly recommend you visit Breaking Through to find the experience that may help you find pain free days as well.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Josh’s methods of physical therapy at Breaking Through are exceptional! He has helped me with both shoulder and knee issues. I was unable to work due to a shoulder injury and after three visits, I could safely return to work without pain. As far as my knee is concerned, I’m bone on bone but through his techniques of therapy, I can walk without pain. My knee doesn’t crackle as much either. With previous therapists, I either didn’t see any improvement or minimal improvement at best. I’m very disciplined about doing my prescribed exercises at home, but no matter how much I did, I was making little progress. At Breaking Through, I see results. My quality of life has improved. The at home exercises are easy which makes me more incredulous that this stuff works! I have referred other patients to Josh, and after a few sessions, they could do things that previously were difficult or painful. One person was told by his therapist that there was nothing more they could do. This was as good as his mobility was going to get. He improved after a couple of sessions. Josh really understands the bio- mechanics of the human body. He applies that knowledge to get you moving. If you have tried physical therapy in the past, just leaving you discouraged, try Breaking Through. You will be encouraged!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Josh is the best medical professional I’ve ever seen for physical ailments / chronic pain. After years of dealing with issues and seeing surgeons / PTs, I’ve improved more in a handful of appointments with Josh than ~5 years with other clinicians. His One80 method is uniquely effective, but it’s his personal dedication to his craft that elevates the quality of care to another level. I’ve gotten back to tennis and golf during my time under his care and look forward to building even more strength!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Love these guys! Josh is excellent at what he does and this technique has helped me considerably. I really like the fact that they have videos for all of the prescribed exercises that they send to you after the appointment . Highly recommend, especially if traditional physical therapy has failed you.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I rented a Neuroptimal device from Jennifer and the crew at Breaking Through Intensive Therapy and had a great experience! From rental all the way through the set up and running of the neurofeedback program the process was seamless. I highly recommend renting the unit or doing in-person neurofeedback sessions from Breaking Through!recommendsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Facebook.

Breaking Through broke through on my first visit! From their welcoming staff to their full body assessments and therapies, they did not disappoint. I no longer have sharp pain in my shoulder and have a plan in place for continued improvement with stretching I can do from home. Highly recommend!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
The name says it all! I truly have broke through my pain with the help I received from Josh and Jen. I came to them with ankle pain and was having trouble walking. The exercises given to me had me feeling better after a few days and fully recovered in just a few weeks! I couldn’t believe how fast it worked! Thanks Josh and Jen!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I came to Josh with severe, debilitating sciatic nerve pain due to an injury I sustained while lifting weights. After one session I had some immediate relief of pain, and improved more and more with each session going forward. After several sessions now I’m back to lifting weights with full range of motion and living day to day life with no pain. Can’t recommend this practice enough. Serious game changer.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Fitness was a HUGE part of my life, until a frozen shoulder' brought everything to a screeching halt. Between the excruciating pain and the traditional physical therapy that just wasn't working, I felt stuck. The standard medical approach to this condition simply didn't cut it for me. I suspected the issues I was having were not isolated to just my shoulder....so out of frustration, and trusting the holistic side of me, I searched for an alternative to the hospital system based "sick care" and looked for wellness care - That’s when I found Breaking Through Intensive Therapy. Their whole-body approach truly works! They uncovered some core issues affecting my mobility that were not just in my shoulder - I do not say this lightly, they literally, gave me my life back. Doctor's take note! They gave me the encouragement, motiviation, and the ability to be active again.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I stumbled upon Breaking Through IT looking for something different than just the traditional PT route suggested by my pcp at UH for my nagging shoulder pain from years of power lifting that has progressively gotten worse especially these last few years keeping me totally out of the gym. Many times I have seen shoulder specialist’s who just recommend doing cortisone injections for flare ups or spending $ and getting an MRI done to either have surgery or just to be recommended to the cookie cutter physical therapy approach and nothing has really been a long term solution for my impingement / rotator cuff pain. So far, I feel like Josh has really taken the time to evaluate my body and movement to diagnose what is the root cause of my pain and using a science based approach to provide me with a specific plan to get me back into the gym and doing my favorite activities with the end goal of being pain free. I am already making progress within my first few weeks and I feel that Josh and Jennifer truly care and are looking to help me recover from this chronic pain!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
After more than 10 years of searching for real answers to ongoing back and hip issues from a previous and traumatic spinal injury, I can honestly say that finding Josh and Jennifer has been life-changing. I was referred to them by a trusted friend after spending over a decade relying on weekly chiropractic care and other “band-aid” treatments that provided only temporary relief—and often left me feeling worse while draining my bank account. I was so desperate for relief and hope but specialists I saw along the way told me that surgery was inevitable, with spinal fusion as the likely outcome. As someone who rides horses and lives an active lifestyle, that option felt incredibly limiting and discouraging. From my very first visit, Josh and Jennifer approached my situation differently. They are not only highly knowledgeable, but also incredibly kind, empathetic, and attentive. They truly listen, take the time to understand the full picture, and communicate clearly every step of the way. I never felt rushed or dismissed—only supported and genuinely cared for. What sets them apart even further is their commitment to lasting results. They focus on addressing the root cause rather than masking symptoms, and it shows. For the first time in over a decade, I have real hope again. I am now back to doing the things I love—pain-free—without relying on constant temporary fixes. I also deeply appreciate how easy they make it to stay on track between sessions. After each visit, they send detailed email summaries along with customized exercises and helpful videos demonstrating proper form. It removes any guesswork and makes continuing progress at home simple and effective. I am beyond grateful for their care, expertise, and encouragement. If you are feeling stuck, discouraged, or out of options, I cannot recommend Josh and Jennifer enough. They have truly given me my quality of life back.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I have been dealing with some unusual pain for over a year and a half, and most doctors did not have any suggestions for me other than traditional physical therapy, which did not help. Eventually I was recommended to go to Breaking Through and I am so glad. I have noticed so much improvement compared to day 1 when I came in for my first evaluation. It's amazing how much this therapy has helped me.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
