You can walk around all day without a problem, but the moment you hit the stairs, your knee starts complaining. Sound familiar?
Maybe it's a sharp pain when stepping down, an uncomfortable ache when climbing up, or a feeling that your knee just isn't as strong or stable as it used to be.
Knee pain on stairs is a common complaint, but here's something you might not realize: the problem isn't always just your knee.
At Breaking Through Intensive Therapy, we believe understanding why something hurts is just as important as understanding where it hurts.
Why Do Stairs Make Knee Pain Worse?
Going up and down stairs requires more from your body than walking on a flat surface.
Your knees bend more deeply, your muscles work harder, and the forces traveling through your knee joint increase.
When you climb stairs, your quadriceps, glutes, and other muscles work together to lift your body upward. When you descend, those same muscles help control your movement as your body lowers toward the next step.
If something in that process isn't working efficiently, stairs may be one of the first places you notice discomfort.
4 Possible Reasons Your Knee Hurts on Stairs
1. Your Kneecap May Not Be Handling the Load Comfortably
Pain around or behind the kneecap is often associated with a condition called patellofemoral pain.
Activities such as climbing stairs, squatting, or sitting with bent knees for long periods can aggravate this type of discomfort.
But the solution isn't necessarily to stop using your knee. Understanding how your knee responds to movement and gradually improving its ability to handle activity can be an important part of recovery.
2. Your Hip Muscles May Be Playing a Role
Your knees don't work independently.
Your hips help control the position and movement of your legs during activities such as walking, running, and climbing stairs.
When hip strength or movement control is limited, it may change how forces are distributed through the knee.
That's one reason a thorough physical therapy evaluation should look beyond the exact spot where you're experiencing pain.
3. Your Ankle Mobility Could Be Limited
Here's one you might not expect!
Your ankles need to move through a certain range of motion as you step up or lower yourself down.
When ankle mobility is restricted, your body may compensate by changing how your knee, hip, or foot moves.
These changes don't automatically cause pain, but they can be contributing factors worth evaluating.
4. Your Knee May Be Sensitive to Increased Activity
Have you recently started exercising more, returned to running, increased your daily steps, or spent more time on your feet?
Sometimes knee pain develops when the demands placed on the joint increase faster than its current ability to tolerate them.
Other factors, including tendon irritation, joint changes, or previous injuries, may also contribute.
The important thing is that not every case of knee pain has the same cause, and not every person needs the same treatment.
Why Does Going Down Stairs Sometimes Hurt More?
If you've noticed that walking downstairs is more uncomfortable than climbing up, you're not imagining things.
Descending stairs requires your muscles to control your body's weight as you lower yourself from one step to the next.
That controlled lowering can place substantial demands on the knee, particularly the muscles and structures around the kneecap.
For someone already experiencing knee discomfort, those demands may make descending stairs especially challenging.
Should You Avoid Stairs If Your Knee Hurts?
Not necessarily.
Completely avoiding movement isn't always the answer, but repeatedly pushing through significant pain isn't a great strategy either.
Depending on your symptoms, temporarily reducing stair use, using a handrail, modifying activity, or working on specific strength and mobility exercises may help.
Persistent pain, swelling, locking, or a feeling that your knee might give way deserves professional attention. If you cannot bear weight, have significant swelling after an injury, or experience severe symptoms, seek prompt medical evaluation.
The Bigger Picture: Look Beyond the Knee
It's easy to focus entirely on the area that hurts.
But your body functions as a connected system.
Your hips, ankles, strength, mobility, movement patterns, and activity levels may all influence how your knee handles everyday tasks.
At Breaking Through Intensive Therapy, our approach focuses on understanding the individual, identifying factors that may be contributing to discomfort, and developing a personalized plan to help improve movement and function.
Because getting back to the activities you love starts with understanding what's holding you back.

Jen and Josh are great! I tried the neurotherapy here, and I felt calm, but focused the rest of the day. I will be coming back, I want to try this again.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

I started taking my 47 year old sister to Breaking Through after she suffered a massive stroke last July. I have no words for the remarkable improvement she has made in 2 months. She is able to bear weight and stand up straight with minimal assistance. I think it is the combination of physical therapy with Josh and Neuro feedback she receives weekly with Jenn. I have been bringing my daughter who has cerebral palsy to see Josh for years for therapy. I am so convinced that their approach to therapy is the way to go.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Due to my cerebral palsy, I have been going to traditional physical therapy since I was a kid. Now as an adult, I was looking for something new. It took me 25 years to find Breaking Through, where Joshua looks at PT from another perspective and approach. He offers The One80 System, which I had never heard of. He treats ALL the muscles by activating them to turn on, not just treating my CP as a temporary fix. Joshua takes the time to work with you and your goals, targeting what you want to accomplish. Within a few sessions, he provided certain exercises that help to keep those muscles moving and strengthen them. It’s been over year since working with Breaking Through, and I can definitely see the difference in how I move around on a daily basis. To bring it home, Jennifer introduced me to Neurofeedback, which is something new that I had not tried. After a few sessions, I can see the benefits it can provide. I am very excited to keep seeing the changes! Thank you Joshua and Jennifer, it’s been great working with you both!!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
The team at Breaking Through is stellar! They focus on finding the root cause of your concerns and treating that cause as opposed to just the symptoms you may be feeling - amazing! Not only do they specialize in PT and neuro feedback, but they are truly passionate about educating their clients so that you understand why the problems are occurring and how they can help you fix it. Being treated is one thing, but being educated and informed throughout the treatment process is what sets them apart from other PT offices. Highly, highly recommend!!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
10 stars! Four months ago after resuming an aggressive (and probably overzealous) 7-days-a-week fitness program, I began to have terrible shoulder pain. The bursitis or inflammation or tendonitis or microtearing (?) was on both sides and I suffered through a whole month while avoiding the gym, watching random YouTube rehab videos, getting massages, taking lots of ibuprofen, and not improving at all. So out of frustration, I started coming to Breaking Through for mapping of the pain, supervised exercises, specialized massage, assignments of exercises to do at home, and specific coaching on how to safely re-enter the gym and ramp back up to my previous workout routine albeit more safely. I got some immediate relief and now I'm 95% better mobility-wise and pain free! What is perhaps more amazing is that during my initial intake at Breaking Through, I was asked to draw on a diagram all the places with pain — and not just the issue bringing me to therapy. So, I marked my right hip as having issues because it's been bothering me for years — even after just walking sometimes. For this issue, I was given exercises and massage treatment ... and within about six weeks that hip pain totally went away — Years of Pain Gone — truly a MIRACLE. For this, I still do the specific home exercises I was assigned because I don't want to ever have that pain come back. I made a slap bracelet with the assigned exercises from Breaking Through written on it so I remember to keep up with them. Just WOW. Very happy we have this place in Cleveland. When I have time I'm also planning on trying out their neurofeedback equipment rental for stress reduction.+3Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

At home Neurofeedback has been so helpful with our 8 yr old son. Since doing the Neurofeedback he has had less tantrums, more peace in the house and quicker diffusions when issues do occur. Having us all do the Neurofeedback was also beneficial as I am able to concentrate better, less memory loss and somehow more patience. I’m so grateful to have found this solution! Thank you Jennifer for all the support and feedback during this time. You really made it simple and easy to integrate into our busy lives. There is no way we could have done this many sessions having to go to a facility. Thank you tremendously!!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
My experience with dynamical neurofeedback was amazing. It felt like my brain was getting a drink of water. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue...lots of physical pain, along with severe ptsd. This brain training relaxed my whole body and released muscle tensions, while it also built up emotional and mental resilience. Eveything is connected.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
When I started looking into neurofeedback, I was led to look into what Breakingthroughit Therapy has to offer. I made an appointment with Jennifer, and it has begun a wonderful relationship of her genuinely caring about my son's needs as it pertains to neurofeedback. Ultimately we are using the system now as a family. Jennifer has gone the second mile, and much more, in making sure our needs are met. I can whole heartedly reccomend this service, if you are looking for a neurofeedback provider. She helped me get set up with a rental system, and when I was ready to buy a system, she fully supported me with all the system configurations. I couldn't ask for a better experience. Also, I fully support the Neuroptimal system as a very easily understood, and powerful tool to use as a home neurofeedback system.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Robert's first day of Neurofeedback had him clear headed and focused most of the day. The weekend had the normal challenges, but he was able to calm down a bit more quickly. I have noticed him not getting upset as easily and when he does get upset, he is able to calm down more quickly. His tick's escalated a bit, but I don't know if it is outside factors at this time. He does not fight going to the appointments and that lets me know that he knows it is helping. I have noticed a lessening of my tinnitus at times and hope this will continue. I am also a bit calmer but our home stress is high, so know it will take a bit longer for me to see a marked improvement. Having had Robert doing Neurofeedback years ago, I am confident that he will be able to focus and have less anxiety in the weeks to come. It took years to get here, we don't expect an overnight miracle.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Thank you Jennifer! I am grateful to know someone like you who cares so much about your patients and family! I can’t wait to be able to do my brain training! Thank you so much Jennifer!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE neurofeedback. We recently rented a neurofeedback unit to use for my son who has a genetic disorder. We had previously done sessions in the office, with good results, but renting the unit was a game changer. I was able to use it as well as my son. It was beneficial for him, but what was so great and surprising was that it helped calm my nervous system so much. I hadn't even realized the toll the stress was taking on my mind and body until I used this system. I was able to just focus calmly instead of feeling like I was running a thousand miles a minute. Highly recommend to any special needs parent. Jen and Josh are wonderful to work with also. They are so knowledgeable and patient with all our questions!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I decided to try neurofeedback and I'm so glad I did. Not only was my sleep amazing but my overall feeling was amazing! Jen was so accommodating and very friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this modality to anyone and highly recommend Breaking Through Intensive Therapy! Transforming experience!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Don’t wait, this is the answer! I used the Nuro feedback machine and it was amazing. I finally feel calm and at peace. My sleep has improved tremendously. I was having nervous system issues prior to this that have almost completely vanished. My husband was able to use the machine as well as my kids. I would recommend this to anyone!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I had such a great experience working with Jen when renting a NeurOptimal neurofeedback. She was such a joy to talk with. She is very knowledgeable about neurofeedback and had a lot of great wellness tips in general. She definitely has a passion for what they’re doing at Breaking Through IT! My husband and I both had amazing results after doing the neurofeedback. Within 2 weeks, my sleep quality and quantity increased tremendously. By the end of our month long rental period, we noticed our cognitive function was better than ever, our anxiety levels decreased, our focus and awareness levels increased greatly, and we just began to function in a more optimal way overall. Being productive all day, everyday began to come naturally. I am so grateful for the mission of Breaking Through IT and am looking forward to continuing to work with them in the future!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
